Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to detect drought earlier, as part of a wider push to strengthen disaster resilience. On 7 July, the Global Initiative on Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions launched an AI Challenge for Drought Detection, crowdsourcing tools to improve early detection of water scarcity.
The initiative, led by various UN agencies, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO), aims to explore how AI can be effectively used in disaster management, providing expert guidance and support for research, innovation, and the development of standards.
The launch featured at the AI for Good Global Summit 2026, where WMO, UN-Habitat and other partners discussed AI’s role in disaster resilience. The session examined how AI can strengthen early warning systems, making them timelier and more accessible, while depending on the quality of underlying data and observations.
